Psychology 233 - Reading Response
Lui & Wong (2012); Strayer & Johnston (2001)

Please answer either of these two questions. It does not matter which you choose. Enter your response and your name in the appropriate boxes below. Then press the submit button.

Lui and Wong (2012): How do you weigh the costs and benefits of the 'media multitasking lifestyle' as described in this paper?  In other words, do the costs outweigh the benefits, or vice versa?

Strayer and Johnston (2001): Imagine that you are a libertarian (which means that you don't want the government to pass laws that restrict your freedom).  How would you attack the method and/or conclusions drawn by Strayer and Johnston (1976)?  In other words, how might you argue that the results obtained by Strayer and Johnston (1976) don't necessarily imply that cell phone use while driving increases the risk of having an accident?  Here are a few suggestions to get you thinking:

  • task difficulty data
  • use of the pursuit rotor task
  • ecological validity
