Loftus and Palmer (1974)

On the basis of their second experiment (see Table 3 below), Loftus and Palmer (1974) claim that the he critical verb did not simply bias the subjects' responses in a particular direction. Instead, they argue that the data indicate that the critical verb altered the subjects' memory for the original event. Why do they make this argument and do you feel that this conclusion is justified?
